Cosmetic Dentistry is not a speciality but an art that focuses on the vision and skill of the clinician to transform a smile beyond the patient’s expectation, realised with the technological advances in instrumentation and the development of novel bio-aesthetic restorative materials.
With the recent media hype on smile aesthetics and preservation of the tooth structure, cosmetic dentistry is adopting a more conservative minimally invasive treatment option to achieve the desired cosmetic outcome to fulfil the patient’s aesthetic demands.
Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry (MiCD) is a holistic approach that integrates minimally invasive treatment techniques with aesthetic dentistry to enhance the smile while taking into consideration the psychology, health, function and aesthetics of the patient.
In addition to achieving the desired aesthetic result while preserving sound tooth structure, MiCD broadens the treatment options with the use of novel biomimetic materials and adopts a “less is more” strategy to reduce patient anxiety and enhance the professional image of the clinician, thus introducing a whole dimension to the practice of traditional cosmetic dentistry which is known to be more invasive.
The philosophy of Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry (MiCD) is being adopted by dental professionals the world over and is gaining popularity among clinicians even in Asia. The first South Asian Cosmetic and Aesthetic Dentistry Congress organised by the South Asian Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry in November 2009 had a special focus session that centred around the theme of Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry.
The Philippine Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (PAED) and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) organised the first MiCD Symposium in Asia on the 21st February 2010 at the New World Renaissance Hotel in Manila. The comprehensive scientific programme highlighted the essence, various aspects and importance of adopting MiCD (Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry) where an excited audience of 400 participants were able to obtain valuable CE credits and had the opportunity to become MiCD members through the PAED and advocate this new trend in Cosmetic Dentistry.
Shofu is proud to be an exclusive partner in the MiCD movement and the principal sponsor at the prestigious event held in conjunction with the induction ceremony of Dr Sonny Burias as the 8th president of PAED for 2010-2012. Dr Burias endorsed the MiCD mission which was to promote the awareness and benefits of Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry to all dental professionals and support their continuing education in adopting MiCD treatment procedures that preserve sound tooth structure while still achieving dramatic aesthetic results.
Shofu recognises the development of new clinical techniques in MiCD procedures and is fully committed to support the MiCD movement through the contribution in developing and providing dental professionals with newer aesthetic biomimetic materials to achieve their goals.
